Off to A Very Important Date!

You know that person who regularly shows up overwhelmed and breathless? Everything is an emergency with them. Life is a fire to put out. Slowing down is not an option. Mania becomes a substitute for productivity.

These are the least effective people I know. And, I should know — I used to be one of them. That is, until it became incredibly boring and unsustainable.

Years ago, I worked in an environment in which we all took a sick pride being the most overwhelmed and overworked. If your car was spotted in the parking lot very early in the morning and also very late into the evening, you won! It was a badge of honor.

There was one company-wide email praising an employee’s work ethic because he was SOOOOO dedicated to his job that he missed the birth of his child. Seriously?? Well, a thousand points for him…..

What To Do?

It truly is a bold move to just stop playing the game. This doesn’t mean you stop your work. (Unless you really do hate it, in which case you might want to take a look at that.) It definitely means stop suffering and complaining. Really, there is no need for it. You can enjoy your life and your work beyond your wildest dreams!  Seriously.

What would work be like if you approached it with a sense of Adventure or Excitement? What would it be like if you were Peaceful in the midst of chaos? What is the attitude you want to bring to work? Rather than allow a work culture to choose for you, you make the conscious choice.

FOR THE NEXT 7 DAYS: Each morning before work, take 5 minutes to consciously choose the attitude you want to bring to your day. Imagine going about your day with that attitude. Attending meetings, having conversations, working on projects, etc. See or feel the impact it has on you and others.

Hot Tip:

Set a calendar-reminder for midday. Use it as your cue to see how you are doing with your chosen attitude. Get back on track if you have derailed. If you are doing great, use it as a moment to enjoy your success and reinforce your progress.
